Event Description

Balancing Growth and Survival in Asia's key logistics intensive markets

The best returns often come from investments made in the worst times. While one hears that from investors many a time, it is also true that investments are not easy to come by in uncertain times, especially of the nature of Private Equity. The times have perhaps never been worse for the logistics sector worldwide. The consumer, in the west as well as at home, is postponing buying decisions creating an almost unexpected lull in the movement of goods – domestic and overseas. The fall in volume has been sharper than the fall in costs resulting in wafer thin margins, if at all, in an increasingly competitive space.

As freight forwarders, transportation providers, third party logistics firms and logistics infrastructure operators continue to face severe challenges in the current environment, the times have also enabled surfacing of opportunities for companies that act flexibly and quickly to changing market dynamics including acquisition of cheap assets and consolidation – an inevitable consequence of the times.

In the last few years, private equity firms and specialty investment bankers have demonstrated significant interest in the sector and the promoters in the space have responded with openness and enterprise. Even as private equity investing in the logistics space is a relatively new phenomenon in the Asian context, a few successful IPOs and M&A activity has added confidence in the investor and proof of concept to the promoter. Private Logistics promoters including those operating in the small and medium range, have been quick to realize that access to private equity can be a credible differentiator. But challenges remain.

Recognizing the diverse challenges of the Asian logistics sector from a private equity perspective, only amplified by the current economic environment, the Global Supply Chain Council is pleased to host its first Private Equity & Logistics Forum on May 20 in Shanghai and May 28 in Mumbai.

The Private Equity & Logistics Forum will help investors gain the insights necessary to navigate in this challenging investing environment. On the other hand, the forum will assist promoters of logistics companies – of all sizes and types, whether in the process of raising PE or considering it – in understanding the private equity world, gauging their PE readiness and identifying capital opportunities. Investment banks and Advisory firms stand to gain from witnessing this exchange of ideas and perhaps even live opportunities. The forum is also designed to bring together investors, bankers and companies with investment potential in an exclusive networking environment.

Participants will explore the issues driving developments in the industry with some of Asia's most reputed and experienced private equity investors and advisors.

Key issues to be addressed include:
- The overall Investment outlook via the PE route for the Logistics sector in India and China respectively
- The wider concept of Private Equity, valuation assessments and the processes that encircle an investment
 - Discussions around raising equity funding in a turbulent global financial market
- Investor as well as Promoter readiness towards fresh investments in the sector, in the backdrop of the current economic climate
- Experiences from investors and promoters who have raised and lived with Private Equity
- The sub-sectors of logistics that have the maximum potential to see PE activity in the next years
- The impact of logistics and financial regulatory changes and what it means for your business
- Debate and network with Asia's key private equity players and logistics experts
- Analyze and deploy the latest risk management strategies in an extremely volatile financial market
- Are India and China still hot investment destinations for private equity?

Thematic Investing in the Indian Logistics Sector
Private equity should play an increasingly important role in developing India's maritime sector, with a preponderance of asset-rich annuity-driven businesses whose growth is intricately pegged to India's economic development. IEP's own experience is in investing in port support services; however, we also see opportunity in our other niche outsourcing and infrastructure development plays.
In this forum, we intend to cover our 'macro-to-micro' investment thesis in investing in the Indian maritime sector; as well as give a flavor of some other 'themes' that we deem attractive.
K.K.Iyer, Partner, India Equity Partners
